GSP coach Firas Zahabi says Nick Diaz should be next in line for welterweight title

Tristar head trainer Firas Zahabi spoke to a MMA media source this week and has stated that Nick Diaz should be considered as the #1 contender for St-Pierre’s welterweight championship. That is of course St-Pierre decides to remain at his native 170-pound weight class.

Speculations are running across the board as to what lay’s ahead for St-Pierre, will it be Anderson Silva? Johny Hendricks or maybe even Nick Diaz?

“I think Diaz is the guy who deserves it most,” Zahabi said. “His fight with Carlos (Condit) was so close. Who knows? People judge it both ways.

“Diaz is the guy who is the Strikeforce champion. He climbed up the ladder all the way. Johny deserves it very much, but Diaz has been there longer and done more fights and has bigger wins.

“If you want to be really fair about it, he is the guy who beat the most amount of names in the biggest fights.”

Diaz, currently serving time for his Marijuana use following his UFC decision loss to Condit back at UFC 143 is waiting patiently on the sidelines to see whets in store for him in 2013.

Zahabi did mention that he will sit down with GSP to discuss options, following next Saturday’s UFC on FOX 5 where the champ will corner Rory MacDonald when he meets B.J. Penn.
