Ottawa’s Nabil “The Thrill” Khatib announces his retirement in MMA

One of Canada’s long-time MMA fighters Nabil Khatib has officially announced his retirement from MMA following his decision loss just this past weekend at WRECK MMA.  An official statement by Khatib below:

Over the weekend there was an amazing finish to a long standing show called Wreck MMA in Gatineau at the Hilton Hotel and Casino. There a number of fights and featured were fights such as Randy Turner title defence, 2 young prospects of our school, Mat Papineau and James Kouame and of course my ever so long desired rematch with Mark “Boots” Holst. Our boys did amazing and I am a very proud coach of course! I want to thank Mark for taking the fight with me and allowing us to “finish” the fight in the class that we did! I think he did a great job defending the take downs which is where I wanted to be. He used his reach to his advantage and did the damage he needed to do to win the decision. I thank everyone who came out to support the last Wreck MMA show and we are sad to see them go when Nick Castiglia did such a great job with the event in organizing and coordinating and more important took care of all the fighters’ very well!

To Nick Castiglia on behalf of me, my students and all the fans of MMA, thank you for giving us and the younger guys a chance to show their skills in the ring and cage! Also want to thank Pat Cooligan for his kind words and I am very happy to have worked with him in recent years.

On this point I will tell you I’ve been fighting for many years now between Kickboxing, Muay Thai, BJJ etc. I started my Martial Arts journey at 26 years old. I had my first professional bout at 36 years young! This was the start of something that drove me to do what I do! I have loved this sport from day one. It’s nothing that I would change for the world. It has given me a pride within myself that I’ve never had. It has given my family monetary and moral support through the years and has definitely helped us make great new friends along the way. We’ve coached amazing students from our first school in Rockland to the new students here in Ottawa.

My goals in this sport have always been the same. Win a title bout, and fight in the UFC. Neither has come to pass as of yet. I have had 3 title fights to some tough opponents and have not been acquired by the UFC. It has been a long time. I’ve tried very hard in my career to stay focused and always true to myself and my family and friends. Never steered away from my goals and took the fights that would help my career, Shonie Carter, Carlos Newton, Gideon Ray etc… I have had some tough fights in my career and have loved even the worst of them. My wife and kids have stayed by my side the whole time and support me all the way.

I have come to terms with the fact that I AM 43 years young. These last few fights have been hard on my body and I’m sorry to say the time has come to hang up my gloves. I’m sitting here typing and tearing in my swollen eyes that this time has finally come. I’m not ashamed for stopping now. I’ve had a great career with finishing at an 11-10 record. I would say 99% of those fights were an amazing experience and wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve learned so much and have many thanks to everyone involved.

This IS my retirement press release. I will now be concentrating on the new fighters from here in my school and anywhere else that needs help. I am honoured to have fought on same card as my 2 students debut pro fight and Wreck MMA’s last event and having to face Mark Boots Holst was a big bonus and happy to have had a great with him to finish off my career win or lose.

I want to thank some very special people throughout my journey. I trained with Fabio Holanda and BTT Canada at the start which is where it all began. Tristar gym has been there for me from day one. Training with great fighters such as David “The Crow” Loiseau, Denis Kang, Rory MacDonald, Mark Bocek, Georges St. Pierre, Mike Ricci, Miguel Torres, Ryan Ford, Francis Carmont, John Makdessi, Ivan Menjivar, Patrick Cote, Nordine Taleb, Nick Denis, Kajan Johnson. I can go on forever, also the up and comers such as Alex Garcia, Steve Simms, James “Thunder” Polodna, Mandel Nallo, again the list go on!

Tristar dorms was an amazing idea with Robbie Stein and Greg Hoffman that has helped me so much in my training!

My coaches through the years thank you so much for your patience and determination to help in my goals.

Starting with traditional Jiu-Jitsu with Brian Aylward, John Therien and Jean-Yves Theriault that kick started my love for the sport.

Firas Zahabi has been a great coach and has supported me throughout my travels. Mitch Mayberger was a great manager and friend. He knows many contacts in the mma fightworld. A very good man to work with in FightHouse Management. Also want to thank Eric O’Keefe, Kajan Johnson, Aieman Zahabi, Olivier Renaud, Denis Kang, David Loiseau, Dan Guillemette, Sasha Hijazi and Fabio Holanda with BTT Canada.

My current coach now in Jiu-Jitsu as well Professor Robert Drysdale! He has been with us about one year now and our Jiu-Jitsu has sky rocketed!  Just an amazing thanks to him and his knowledge!

My kids Jon, Leila and Nadia were my BIGGEST fans through the years, I love you all so much! My sisters and brother Rose, Shadia, Amal and Smiley thank you so much!

But MOST of all, my thanks go to my lovely and patient wife Tania Khatib who has put up with my training and eating habits for such a long time! I love you so much you can’t even imagine. You have stood by me in thick and thin, even when I come home looking the way I do. You supported me no matter what. Now I’m done.

I look forward to seeing you all in the near future with my fighters in the corner and make sure you are as loud for them as you were for me! It was an excellent run and a GREATER experience and I thank you all for your support!

I will also be looking forward to sharing my knowledge with all of you in the near future. I will available for seminars anytime throughout the year. Please contact my manager Mitch Mayberger for further details at mmamanagement@hotmail.com

SHORT NOTE: I WILL NEVER SAY NO TO A FIGHT IN THE UFC NO MATTER WHAT. IF IT HAPPENS IT HAPPENS

“Reaching a goal may not always be achieved in the act itself, but rather by touching the lives of the people you’ve affected during your journey. Bushido”

Much love

Nabil “The Thrill” Khatib
