TJ Grant ready for war at UFC on FOX 6 “A win over Matt Wiman should put me in the top 10”

Nova Scotia’s own, TJ Grant burst onto the UFC scene in April of 2009 with his debut win coming over Ryo Chonan.  Since that fight, he has racked up a record of 5-3, with his last three wins coming in since dropping to lightweight.

Grant’s last performance was against highly regarded Evan Dunham at UFC 152 in Toronto where he won fight of the night honors and slid higher in the 155-pound rankings with his win over Dunham.

Grant’s next fight will be against one of the divisions most durable and complete fighters as he battles “Handsome” Matt Wiman on January 26, 2013 at UFC on FOX 6 which takes place in Chicago Illinois.

MMACanada.net caught up with the Cole Harbour native to discuss his next fight, his thoughts on a planned UFC event in Nova Scotia and much more.

Q: TJ, you are on a three fight win streak, with your most recent win over the tough Evan Dunham back at UFC 152 in Toronto. Can you describe the win, and how you are feeling since dropping to lightweight?

A:  It was the type of fight you always hope for. But it takes two dudes willing to put it on the line like we did. I knew they picked the wrong fight to take off the main card! Dunham is a tough hombre and getting a win over him in a fight like that is all you could ask for.

Q: Your next fight is scheduled for Jan. 26, 2013 at UFC on Fox 6, where you will be taking on Matt Wiman.  Can you talk about Matt as an opponent, and why you chose this fight?

A: Unfortunately I don’t get to choose opponents otherwise I would choose a much easier opponent than Matt! All we can do is make suggestions and ultimately its Joe Silva’s call. But this was one of the fights at 155 I liked. Matt is just like my last opponent in a lot of ways. He will come forward and risk it all as will I. I’m here to make a name and at the same time make a lot of money. Me and Matt are gonna go to war. It’s gonna be fun

Q: Wiman is riding a two-fight win streak, and has earned a fight of the night and submission of the night in his last two wins.  Where do you feel he is strong and how do you feel he matches up against you?

A: It comes down to execution on the night. Matt is very dangerous fighter in a lot of aspects as am I. Wherever the fight goes I feel comfortable. That is all I can say.

Q: Where do you have the advantage over Wiman in this fight, and where do you feel you would be placed in the rankings with a win over Wiman?

A: A win over Wiman puts me in the top 10. That’s what I believe I  never look past any opponent but a win over a top fighter like Wiman and 4 straight has to be getting some attention.

Q: Since your inception into the UFC, how has your overall fighting skills progressed?

A: Every fight I’ve had in the UFC I look back on and shake my head. Lol I always feel like I can do better. That’s just how I am. I always learn from every fight. There are many lessons to be learned in this game. I still don’t know anything. It’s a never ending journey. But I’m moving in the right direction.

Q: The UFC has been expanding very quickly, hosting shows almost everywhere on the globe. There are talks about a possible UFC fight night in east coast Canada, most likely Halifax.  Seeing that your based out of the east coast, how do you feel the fans will react to a live UFC event in your area?

A: Easily will sell out in no time. People from all over the Maritimes would come to a show here. Hopefully the UFC can get it done. There is lots of talent here to hopefully the UFC will add to their roster.

Q: Lastly, can you discuss your training camp, who have you been working with and have you been travelling outside of your native Nova Scotia and participating in other camps?

A: I have been doing all of my training camp here in Cole Harbour at fitplus martial arts. Coach Scott Maclean runs a great  camp here. I have so many guys that help me. Tristan Johnson, josh Palmer Ryan Connor Adam Piercey and many others. I also have people coming in to do some training like Jordan Mein who has helped me for a few fights now. Dude is an absolute beast.
