Charmaine Tweet is in the best shape of her career heading into Invicta FC 7 fight on Dec. 7 against Julia Budd

Invicta FC 7 takes place on December 7, 2013 from Kansas City and will feature two Canadian female stars Charmaine Tweet and Julia Budd. caught up with Regina, Saskatchewan’s Charmaine Tweet to discuss her training, why she wanted to fight a seasoned veteran like Julia Budd and her thoughts on fighting for Invicta FC.

Q) Charmaine, your next fight is at Invicta 7 on Dec 7 against fellow Canadian and veteran Julia Budd. How did this fight present itself to you and why did you decide to take it?

A) I am very excited for this fight! It’s one that my management and Invicta FC have been working on for a while. Originally I was ask to take this fight for Invicta FC 5 but it was a short notice fight ( 2 weeks ) and as a Team , my coaches & myself decided that was not the best for me with out a full camp. But now things are perfect for this fight, and with a full training camp along with being 100% healthy, I was eager to jump on this opportunity.

Q) You both have been fighting for quite some time, how important is it for you and your career to beat Julia in the Invicta cage?

A) You know, I get that a lot, “you have been around a while” .. But the bottom line is I’m in the best shape of my career and my experience and training is on an entirely different level these days. Julia also is a phenomenal athlete , and both of us are ranked in the top 5 @ 145. Its time to meet each other and give the fans what they want. But lets not mince words… I will come out with the W on Dec 7th, and be looking for a Title Shot!!

Q) We have all seen that you been improving your game and have changed drastically over the past year, can you talk about that along with your training regime?

A) I spent 10 years working and raising to the top with my Muay Thai. The past 2 years has been focused on BJJ & Wrestling to give myself a more rounded MMA game. My camp loves every time the press refers to me as a submission specialist. Although I have won every fight via submission , I can promise you, I still know how to throw down. Come Dec 7th , I’m more then willing to stand and bang with Julia!!

Q) How do you see yourself beating Julia and what are some of the advantages you feel you have over her?

A) I see the two of us meeting in the middle of the cage and going toe to toe … this will be the fight, the fans want to see. I don’t see any area of Budd’s game where don’t have an advantage.

Q) How has the support been in Regina, Saskatchewan and how do you feel women’s MMA is received in your province?

A) The support from friends and family and people we know is fantastic. But if you look at the big picture , there is still little to no main stream media involvement for WMMA in Saskatchewan. But we are slowly gaining ground, and with an Invicta FC fight … we are hoping it will elevate our sport though out Canada. Training in Regina is amazing …I have the best team at Wiley BJJ , and my training partners and coaches are behind me 110% … My gym family is the most supportive in every way!!!!

Q) We all know that fighting in the UFC is every fighters dream. What do you think it will take for you to get in the Octagon and what is your 1-2 year goal from now?

A) To tell you the truth , I am very happy being a part of Invicta FC , they have always believed in me and my talent . That being said , There is talk of the UFC coming to my home town of Saskatoon in 2014 , and we would absolutely be excited to fight for the UFC if the offer was to be made. It would be hard to make 135 lbs , but being the only Pro Female from Saskatchewan , and being from Saskatoon… It would make a great promotion for a fight . How knows , maybe thats when they will introduce their 145 division 🙂 . My goals right now are simple , Beat Julia Budd on Dec 7th and ask for my Title shot in early 2014. Long term goals would be to hold both the 145 & the 155 Title Belt for Invicta FC . That is once Invicta FC launches their 155 Division. Right now its just rumours 😉

Q) What were your thoughts on the UFC 166 bout between our fellow Canadian Sarah kaufman and Jessica Eye. Fight Metric published it’s stats and it clearly looked like Kaufman won that fight but one of the judges saw it a different way?

A) I thought Sarah won that fight … but the judges make the final call.  Just a quick shout out to my sponsors and coaches , without them , none of this would be possible . Jeff Wiley , Nolan Coller, Myke Yee, Deryl Bangsund (Wiley BJJ ) … MisFit Industries, Com Tech, Dedicated Few, Canada Whey, Arjay Fight Gear, MMA Cauliflower Ears , Domo , Jiffy Lube (Weyburn) … and all my friends and family for their amazing support.
