MFC Middleweight Champ Alvey Ready to Defend Belt

MFC Staff Nikolai Gionti – Sam Alvey has had a busy few months. He won the belt in October, was honored in November by the state of California for earning the MFC middleweight title later and most recently won a Muay Thai fight that he took on a week’s notice. But, for the first time, Alvey will now defend his MFC middleweight title against Wes Swofford at MFC 40.

Alvey earned the middleweight title against Jason South at MFC 38, where he finished the now welterweight contender via TKO near the end of the fifth round. It was a culmination of all the hard work and lessons that he learned following his title loss in his first Maximum Fighting appearance at MFC 36.

“I learned I need to listen to my corner more,” Alvey says. “Especially my wife.”

Alvey took those lessons and put them into practice with two straight knockouts over Jay Silva and Jason South and will now look to defend his title for the first time. While many may put more pressure on themselves after winning a belt, knowing that everyone is now gunning for them, Alvey is the opposite.

“I think it’s a huge advantage to hold the belt.” Says Alvey, “I go in there and I know that it’s going to be a bad night for Swofford.”

He also credits teammate Tom Gallicchio for helping prepare him for MFC 40 on May 9th.

“All of my best fights have been when I’ve cornered teammates on the same card,” Alvey explains. “I don’t think that I’m going to be able to corner Tom, but I’ll be in the back warming up and helping him get ready for his fight.”

There tends to be a lot of nerves in the fight game. What happens if I don’t perform? If I lose? For Alvey the problem may be the exact opposite.

He already has a fight scheduled following his title defense, but does not view it as a distraction and thanks President Mark Pavelich for the opportunity.

“I view it like anyone at any other job. If the opportunity is there I take it and I know that Mark has such huge confidence in his organization and his fighters that he can put us up against other guys.” Alvey says.

As for now though, Alvey is just preparing for a tough fight with Wes Swofford. He knows that it will be a challenge, but guarantees that two belts come back to Team Quest between himself and teammate Gallicchio.

The MFC’s #PunchTheVote campaign is still going on to determine the main event at MFC 40. To vote for Sam Alvey all you have to do is use the hashtags #MFC40 #THEMFC and #middleweights.

MFC 40: Crowned Kings can be seen on AXS TV on May 9, 2014. Tickets are available through and the MFC Ticket Hotline at 780.504.2024780.504.2024
