Patrick Cote vs. Stephen Thompson slated for UFC 178 in Las Vegas

MMAJUNKIE – Patrick Cote (20-8 MMA, 7-8 UFC) didn’t get his preferred matchup, but he got a solid opponent for his next outing.

The Canadian welterweight recently told MMAjunkie Radio he wanted a fall matchup with fellow vet Thiago Alves (20-9 MMA, 12-6 UFC). Instead, he’ll meet Stephen Thompson (9-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) at UFC 178.

UFC officials recently announced the bout.

UFC 178 takes place Sept. 27 in Las Vegas, though a specific venue has not yet been announced. The main card, including a headliner between light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson, airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

It’s not clear where Cote vs. Thompson will be placed on the lineup.

Since a three-fight losing streak that forced his UFC release in 2010, Cote has won seven of eight fights. The 34-year-old Canadian went 4-0 on the regional scene and got an invite back to the promotion, though he then suffered a decision loss to Cung Le at UFC 148. However, since then, he’s won three straight fights, topping Alessio Sakara (via disqualification), Bobby Voelker and his rival coach on “The Ultimate Fighter: The Nations,” Kyle Noke.

He now looks for his fourth straight UFC victory when he meets fellow striker Thompson, a 31-year-old kickboxer who also looks for his fourth consecutive UFC win. Since a decision loss to Matt Brown in his second UFC fight, Thompson has posted wins over Nah-Shon Burrell (decision), Chris Clements (knockout) and Robert Whittaker (TKO). Three of his four UFC wins have now come via knockout.

The latest UFC 178 card now includes:
