UFC 189: Jose Aldo vs. Conor McGregor featherweight title fight official for July 11 in Las Vegas

It’s official!  The much anticipated title bout between rising star and number one contender Conor McGregor and featherweight wrecking ball and current champion Jose Aldo has been made official following a fan Q&A earlier Friday in Las Vegas.

“We have the fight date for McGregor-Aldo, the biggest fight of the year. Saturday, July 11 at International Fight Week. I’m going to rip that Brazilian’s head off.”

When asked to compare his chances with those of Aldo’s past foes, Chad Mendes and Frankie Edgar, Conor said there is no comparison, because he’s a different animal when compared to short wrestlers who should be fighting at bantamweight.

“That’s a good question. I am a different animal than Frankie and Chad. I believe, personally, that both of those competitors should be 135’rs. Aldo has made a career out of beating short wrestlers who are not the best on the feet. Now, it’s a different ball game altogether. Now, you’re coming in with a guy with long reach, range that is going to come straight for you straight from the bell. This is going to be a different contest, all you have to do is look to realize that. It is not the same fight.”

McGregor earned his spot after stopping Dennis Siver at UFC Fight Night 59 a few weeks back.  “Notorious” has been impressive in his last outings and is named by many as the “next” big thing in the UFC.

Champion Jose Aldo has not lost since defending his title to Mark Hominick in Toronto back in 2011.  He has amassed 7 straight wins in the UFC.
