Rory MacDonald gets title shot against Robbie Lawler at UFC 189 on July 11

It’s official!  Canada’s Rory MacDonald will FINALLY get his chance to become the UFC Welterweight Champion when he challenges Robbie Lawler at UFC 189 on July 11 in Las Vegas.

The news made by UFC president Dana White, who announced the matchup during today’s (Feb. 18, 2015) press conference to talk about the recent string of failed drug tests.   The title shot came to MacDonald because Hector Lombard (Rory’s upcoming opponent) failed his UFC 182 post-fight drug test.  Hector Lombard’s loss is Rory MacDonald’s gain.

MacDonald will start training immediately to make no mistake and bring the belt back to Canada since his long-time training partner and friend GSP vacated the belt back in 2013.

As it stands, UFC 189 will also feature a much-anticipated featherweight title fight between Ireland’s Conor McGregor and long-time champ, Brazilian Jose Aldo.  It is still unsure as to which bout will be the main-event.
