Montreal’s John Makdessi gets Donald Cerrone at UFC 187 with Nurmagomedov injured

Montreal, Quebec’s John Makdessi has agreed to step in and replace on short notice the injured Khabib Nurmagomedov and face Donald Cerrone at UFC 187.

UFC 187 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 23 and features two title bouts, as Anthony Johnson meets Daniel Cormier for the vacant light heavyweight strap, while Chris Weidman defends the middleweight title against Vitor Belfort.

Makdessi is fresh off a TKO victory over Shane Campbell this past April in Montreal at UFC 186. His quick victory, that left him unmarked, will allow him to step in on short notice and face his toughest task yet in Donald Cerrone.

“I want to thank the UFC and [Donald Cerrone] for this great opportunity,” Makdessi wrote on Twitter. “This will be an exciting fight for the fans.”

Cerrone, who has fought a list of the who’s who in the 155-pound division, has been impressive, outpointing Benson Henderson in his last fight at UFC Fight Night in Boston this past January.
