Fabricio Werdum proved the oddsmakers and finished Cain Velasquez in the third round of their heavyweight title unification bout at UFC 188 in front of a sell-out crowd of 20,000+ at Arena Ciudad de México in Mexico City. The Brazilian submitted “Brown Pride” to become the undisputed heavyweight champ. In the co-maim event, Eddie Alvarez defeated Gilbert Melendez by split decision. Melendez looked on fire in the early opening but Alvarez took over in the later rounds.
