Ottawa to host UFC Fight Night in June

The first UFC event on Canadian soil in 2016 will take place in Ottawa on Saturday, June 18, with a UFC Fight Night event.

UFC officials have confirmed the news this past Friday at the organization’s “Unstoppable” press event in Las Vegas prior to the UFC 196 weigh-ins.

The event will air on TSN5 and RDS2 in Canada and FS1 in the United States. On June 18, Rory MacDonald will step back in the ring when he headlines the UFC’s first foray into Ottawa in a fight with rising star Stephen Thompson.

“All I can do is put on the best performance and show that I have improved,” MacDonald said on Friday at the UFC Unstoppable press conference in Las Vegas. “I’m a fighter for life. One time getting my a– kicked isn’t going to derail me, it’s part of the game.”

“He’s a good guy,” said Thompson, who calls South Carolina home. “What better guy to fight in Canada than Rory MacDonald? He’s the best in the welterweight division, he’s the No. 1 (contender). To prove to the fans and the UFC that I’m ready for that next level, I have to face off against him.”

“I’m excited to tell you that we’re going to be coming to the beautiful nation’s capital, one of my favourite cities in the country,” said Tom Wright, the executive vice-president of UFC Canada, Australia and New Zealand, speaking with Postmedia Thursday.
