Saved! Cris Cyborg vs Yana Kunitskaya headlines UFC 222, Frankie Edgar vs Brian Ortega booked as co-main event

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has salvaged its upcoming UFC 222 pay-per-view (PPV) event — which is set to go down on March 3, 2018 — as the promotion has booked current women’s Featherweight champion Cris Cyborg to headline the card in a five-round title fight against Yana Kunitskaya.

In the co-main event, Frankie Edgar will face off against Brian Ortega in a non-title fight, according to MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani.

Edgar was initially set to face current Featherweight champion Max Holloway in the headlining spot before “Blessed” was bounced from the card with an unfortunate injury. Edgar vowed to stay on the card regardless, and thankfully “T-City” stepped up to face the former Lightweight champion on short notice.

Ortega was last seen choking the life out off Cub Swanson at UFC Fight Night 123 last December, picking up his thirteenth straight win. The fight will undoubtedly crown a No. 1 contender to Max’s strap, which means it’s a huge risk for “The Answer,” as he already had the shot locked in the bag.

As for the headlining act, Cyborg is coming off a dominant victory over Holly Holm at UFC 219 last December (see it), and was in talks to defend her strap against current women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes at UFC 224. But, since the promotion needed to pull a rabbit out of the hat, her services were needed much sooner than that.

Kunitskaya, meanwhile, is the current Invicta 135-pound champion, winning the vacant strap by dominating Raquel Pa’aluhi this past August. And while she isn’t the true 145-pounder Cyborg would’ve liked, it will have to do for now.
