UFC 222 Preview and Updated Fight Card

There has been plenty of confusion over the fight card for UFC 222, which will take place on 3rd March at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Initially, the main event was supposed to be Max Holloway vs Frankie Edgar for the UFC Featherweight Championship. However, Holloway announced on 3rd February that he would not be fighting due to a leg injury.

There was a suggestion that T.J Dillashaw and Cody Garbrandt would headline the event in a Bantamweight Championship bout, but that too fizzled out. In the end, UFC has settled on Cris Cyborg v Yana Kunitskaya. Edgar will remain on the card to face Brian Ortega, in what is being termed as a co-main event.

The current card looks like this:

  • Cris Cyborg vs Yana Kunitskaya, women’s featherweight.
  • Frankie Edgar vs Brian Ortega, featherweight.
  • Sean O’Malley vs Andre Soukhamthath, bantamweight.
  • Stefan Struve vs Anfrei Arlovski, heavyweight.
  • Cat Zingano vs Ketlen Vieira, women’s bantamweight.

Notable bouts on the prelim cards:

  • Ashley Yoder vs Mackenzie Dern, women’s strawweight.
  • Beneil Dariush vs Bobby Green, lightweight.

Cyborg vs Kunitskaya will be worthy main event

After all the chopping and changing was done, UFC 222 is still left with a compelling main event in Cyborg vs Kunitskaya. Cyborg (19-1-0) is box-office material and adds to the convincing argument that more women should be headlining MMA events. The fact that Kunitskaya (10-3-0) has never fought in UFC before makes the bout even more intriguing. She, like Cyborg, is a former Invicta champion and, although an upset seems unlikely, she should give a good account of herself.

Cyborg is overwhelming favourite with the bookmakers however. She is available at odds of 1/8 to win the fight, with Kunitskaya priced around the 7/1 mark.

Edgar and Ortega much harder to call than women’s main event

Frankie Edgar (21-5-1) and Brian Ortega (13-0) looks like one that is much more difficult to call. Edgar is ranked below champion Max Holloway and Jose Aldo in the UFC Featherweight rankings, with the unbeaten Ortega right behind him. The bookmakers are calling this one in Edgar’s favour, with odds of 11/25 for the New Jersey native to win the fight. Ortega is priced at 33/20. Ortega would probably take issue with being seen as underdog for the fight, especially given his unbeaten record. He was very impressive in his bout against Cub Swanson UFC Fight Night 123. However, he has yet to face anyone in the same calibre as Edgar.

Plenty to interest mma fans on the undercard for UFC 222

Also undefeated in his short career, Sean O’Malley will take on Andre Soukhamthath earlier in the night. At just 23-years-old, O’Malley looks to have a huge future ahead of him in MMA. While Stefan Struve and Anfrei Arlovski are both in danger of gaining ‘journeymen’ labels in their respective careers, the pair look evenly matched and should deliver a good fight. Zingano and Vieira could easily deliver the fight of the night and make it worth catching the whole show.
