Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic Set For Historic Bout

When Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic square off for the UFC heavyweight title at UFC 226, there is much more on the line than just the UFC heavyweight title. The legacies of both fighters are on the line, with the ability to be considered one of the sport’s all-time greats the reward for a job well done. And for Daniel Cormier, the right to be called the greatest of all time is in play. Can Cormier cut down Miocic and join the list of MMA immortals?

Daniel Cormier has lost once in his MMA career, with that loss coming to Jon “Bones” Jones. Of course, it later came out that Jones turned out to be a rampant user of performance-enhancing drugs. Regardless of your opinion on the legitimacy of that loss, there aren’t many better than Cormier in the history of mixed martial arts. And while it comes from a biased source, Cormier’s head coach Javier Mendez has stated that a win in the Miocic fight would make him one of the greatest of all-time.

Javier Mendez isn’t necessarily wrong there, as a 20-1 record with titles in multiple weight classes is as impressive a resume as there could be in the sport. Jones isn’t happy about the praise that Cormier has been receiving with regard to his candidacy for being one of the greatest ever. Given the rivalry between him and Cormier, this isn’t surprising, but it can easily be argued that Cormier is the best ever.

Of course, achieving that will be easier said than done. Cormier is great, but Miocic has carved out an extremely successful career of his own by taking on some of the biggest names in the heavyweight division. Miocic has successfully defended the UFC heavyweight crown three times since winning it over Fabricio Werdum.

Given Cormier’s status as an all-time elite fighter, is an underdog in the fight as a result of him moving up to the heavyweight division. While you might see favourites in boxing as huge favourites, MMA odds tend to stay relatively tight due to the higher variance in the sport. Unlike boxing betting fight odds from bet365, which don’t see as many knockouts in major fights, UFC odds have to account for the fact that one punch can end a fight at any time.

And both Miocic and Cormier are great at producing knockout victories. The two of them have combined for 22 knockout wins in their careers, with Miocic having 13 knockouts to his name and Cormier scoring 9. In this fight, a knockout win would cement either fighter as a legend. But that is especially true for Cormier, who has to face the added challenge of jumping a weight class while also taking on the champion of their division with a belt up for grabs.

Regardless of all of the legacy discussion, Cormier vs. Miocic should just be a very interesting fight between two fighters who are both explosive and consistently dominant. And no matter who wins, there will be a worthy champion in the heavyweight division.
