Who will Canada’s top MMA fighters be in 2020?

Mixed martial arts has become a massive business since it burst onto the scene in the early 1990s. Since then, around 450 million people globally have gotten into MMA, and it is certainly popular within Canada. Of course, if you follow MMA, you can also make money by backing Canadian-born fighters to emerge victorious at any bouts they have in 2020. The Fox Bet sportsbook PA is a popular site to bet with for Pennsylvanian MMA fans, and there are also others online to use if you fancy trying this out.

Before you put any bets on though, it is worth thinking about what 2020 could hold for the best Canadian MMA fighters. Who are they though, and what could 2020 have in store for them?

Jesse Arnett

Arguably the top MMA fighter hailing from Canada in 2020, according to Pound for Pound rankings, is still Jesse Arnett. The last few years have not been good for him though, with cancelled bouts and losses spoiling a proposed UFC contract. This makes 2020 a big year for the man they call the ‘Big Cat’, and he has already started in style with a February 2020 win against Adam MacDougall. Although the March 2020 bout against Chris Johnson has now been cancelled, he plans to fight in May to notch up another victory. Hailing from Calgary, Arnett is known for his wrestling skills and his powerful punching. With 16 wins from 22 fights, he remains prominent on the MMA Bantamweight scene.

Josh Hill

Currently just behind Arnett at number two in the Canadian Pound for Pound rankings is ‘Gentleman’ Josh Hill. Coming out of Stoney Creek, Ontario, he is also one of the premier active Canadian MMA fighters. With a 19-3-0 record, he also fights at Bantamweight and actually beat Arnett in May 2019 via a referee stoppage decision. He last fought at the end of February in Bellator 239 when he got a unanimous points win against Vinicius Zani. Hill is a powerful fighter who is adept with his feet and hands while also being good on the ground. Although he has no more confirmed fights lined up in 2020 as yet, he will be eager to have at least one more bout against top-class opposition to stay fresh.

Shane Campbell

Going by the nickname of ‘Shaolin’, Shane Campbell is definitely one of the best Canadian MMA fighters on the scene today. He fights with a predominantly Muay Thai style, with savage elbows, knees and roundhouse kicks used effectively. Originally from Ontario and fighting at Welterweight, his record of 17 wins from 25 fights is impressive. He should have fought Mike Santiago in January 2020, but this was cancelled, and he is looking for more matchups in 2020. Many think that a couple of wins in Fight Night or Unified MMA could even bring him back to the UFC for another crack at the Octagon this year.

TJ Laramie

With an 11-3-0 record to his name, the man they call ‘The Truth’ is firmly established as a top Canadian MMA star. Primarily fighting in the PFC now after leaving TKO, he has thrilled many MMA fans with his explosive style. Laramie last fought in December 2019 when he won out against Andrew Cruz with a unanimous decision from the judges. This now sees him as TKO and PFC Featherweight Champion and ready to carry on his good form in 2020.

Many believe that his obvious potential will see him get a shot on the Contender series or a proper UFC call-up in the coming year. He has the all-round game to flourish, with great wrestling skills, awesome punching power, and a wealth of fighting experience in Canadian MMA that stands him in good stead. With no confirmed bouts for 2020 as yet, it will be interesting to see who he is matched up against next.

MMA in Canada is thriving

As this list shows, the whole MMA scene in Canada is really buoyant currently. The above are the top Canadian MMA athletes to know about, but there are also others such as Teddy Ash. This shows how vibrant the whole industry is in Canada and how popular MMA is around the country. It will be interesting to see what fights the above athletes have next in 2020 – not only in the regional Canadian scene but also further afield in competitions such as the UFC.
