Road to Freedom Fight: Title Quest Part 1

So goes the old adage; No pain, no gain.  Eric ‘Diesel’ Muir is all too familiar with this proverb.  Unless you’re a hardcore fan of the sport or one of his training partners, family members or friends – you’ve probably never heard his name in MMA circles before.  Don’t let mediocrity fool you – Eric is as dedicated to his profession as they come.

Freedom Fight: Title Quest in Gatineau, Quebec is around the corner.  The Freedom Fight promotion carries a deep sense of history with it in the world of Canadian MMA and the promotion’s fifth installment will mark Eric Muir’s third professional bout.  July 26th will deliver fans three title fights and promises to be a phenomenal night of action.  Although Eric doesn’t find himself vying for any of the belts, he’s got his hands full on the under card that night against a tough and experienced Markhaile ‘Showtime’ Wedderburn.  This fight will determine who’s eating at the top of the food chain in Freedom Fight’s welterweight division.

Eric holds a record of 2-0 with both victories coming by way of TKO.  “My biggest strength is probably my ground and pound, my last two fights have ended because of TKO’s from ground and pound”, states Muir.  At this level in the sport, there is no possible way of supporting oneself without making sacrifices and working full time, while dedicating every free moment to training.  “I work a day job – I’ve had to sacrifice opportunities for advancement because it would mean a switch to shift work which would upset my training regimen”, admits Muir.  Speaking of a training regimen, Eric isn’t messing around; “what a lot of people don’t realize is all of the behind the scenes sacrifices we make – I stick to a strict diet, work on my strength and conditioning, my endurance and I bring all the techniques together here in the gym.  I work on my stand up, my wrestling and my Jiu-Jitsu – everything comes together in the gym.”

Eric is fighting out of Bruckmann Martial Arts in Oshawa, Ontario.  When asked about his team and the implementation of a game plan and a strategy for July 26th Eric admitted that “I’ve got a great team behind me, Friedel Aristyl – my kickboxing coach and all of my training partners, but the one that implements my strategy and game plan is definitely Professor Bruckmann – Justin knows me the best, he knows the way I fight, so he takes care of that.”

When it comes to aspirations for the sport, the 25 year old is surprisingly grounded.  “Fighting in the big shows has become a dream of mine, if I don’t get there, I’m content with what I’ve done and what I’ve been given with this sport”.  His drive and ambition can be attributed to something bigger than the draw of fame; “I am truly blessed by God to be in the position that I am in, I owe everything to the Good Lord”.

With Freedom Fight showcasing some great Canadian talent, MMACanada.net will be following two fighters leading up to their respective fights.   We will have the inside scoop as we will be in the dressing rooms with the fighters as they prepare to lay it all on the line.  Stay tuned for part two where we will reveal the second fighter we will be following on the Road to Freedom Fight: Title Quest.
