Road to Freedom Fight: Title Quest – Part II
Sean McManus

The road to Freedom Fight has been paved with blood, sweat and anticipation for Robin Black.  In part II of our ‘Road to Freedom Fight’ series we catch up with Robin as he prepares for his 135lb. debut against Chris ‘The Pitbull’ Myra at the end of this month.  Robin Black is a well known Much Music personality playing a brash and arrogant judge on Much Music’s VJ search amongst other roles.  Robin also allowed viewers a glimpse into his journey to become an MMA fighter through his Much Music documentary, ‘Robin Black: Cage Fighter’.  Robin trades in his rock star persona for a chance to get locked in a ring for his MMA debut on Saturday, July 26th in Hull Quebec for Freedom Fight: Title Quest.

There is a lot of fanfare and media attention surrounding Robin’s debut.  He’s been flogged on forums by fans that only see a blue haired guy who’s wearing nail polish entering the world of MMA.  The media coverage obviously comes on the heels of Robin’s hard work and dedication in the world of music and media.  The fans interpret what they’ve seen of Robin on television, “I played a character on TV, Robin ‘fucking’ Black – and that is what the fans perceive me to be…so I understand where they are coming from.”

What the fans don’t see is the 6 – 8 hour days Robin spends in the gym getting his ass kicked repeatedly and drilling his stand up and honing his wrestling and BJJ.  They haven’t adhered to the strict diet of “…chicken and green stuff” as Robin so eloquently states.  What it boils down to, is a lot of fans of the sport have written Robin off as a flashy glam rocker and media whore who is pressing his luck by entering the world of MMA.  Don’t be quick to write Robin off, he’s a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and is a self professed “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu nerd” who honed his skills at Toronto BJJ and has now joined the all star cast at Xtreme Couture Toronto.  Working stand up with Mark Hominick and Chris Horodecki can bring the striking game to whole other level, while working Jiu-Jitsu with Mark Bocek and rolling with Adrian Wooley (the current 135lb. TKO champ) will definitely satisfy Robin’s ‘nerdy’ BJJ needs.

Assassin Fight Wear, based out of Calgary is Robin’s sponsor – another perk of coming into the fight game with some notoriety.  Assassin has provided Robin with some great support including a pair of ‘booty’ or ‘Wanderlei’ shorts for him to fight in.  Although Robin is well aware of his doubters and haters, he’s all business; “What’s worse than getting your ass kicked by a blue haired guy with nail polish, is getting your ass kicked by a blue haired guy with nail polish wearing ‘booty’ shorts”.

Join MMACanada.net as we follow Robin Black and from our first part in this series, Eric Muir.  We will be following the two fighters through their weigh-ins, into their respective locker room warm ups and we will catch up with them after their fights.  We will also bring you all the other action from Freedom Fight: Title Quest which promises to be a phenomenal night of fights.  For more information please visit www.freedomfight.tv .
