David Stanford - In what can only be described as one if the most unique and rockin venue's in which to hold a mixed martial arts event, Calgary's Flames Central was alight with fights Saturday night as Lethbridge's Rumble in the Cage promotion took it's show on the road.
It was an action packed night that saw both Jordan Mein and Charlie Langford walk away with dominant victories over their opponents, while Andrew Buckland and Nolan Clark put on a great back and forth battle. Main Event Andrew Buckland vs Nolan Clark 185 lbs Buckland scored throughout the first round with hard kicks to the body and legs of Clark. However, it was Clark who managed a couple of take downs. After the first takedown Nolan let Buckland up, at whch point Buckland laid into Nolan with a vicious kick to the ribs. That kick was Nolan's signal to take the fight back to the ground where they finished the round grappling. Buckland started the second round much fresher than Nolan, who was still smarting from the body kick and visibly gassed. Buckland scored with a hard right which he used to set up a takedown. With Nolan pressed against the cage Buckland unloaded with punches and elbows that left Nolan huddled up for cover, forcing the referee to stop the bout.
(Andrew Buckland def. Nolan Clark via TKO - Round 2, 1:48)
Main Card Jordan Mein vs. Tim Skidmore 185lbs This fight was decisively settled in no time at all as Jordan Mein used powerful, accurate strikes to dismantle Tim Skidmore right from the outset. After avoiding Skidmore's initial punches and after landing a couple of crisp shots of his own to his opponents head, Mein scored with a couple of hard body shots that crumpled Skidmore. Mein pounced quickly and ferociously pounded out a tko stoppage. (Jordan Mein def. Tim Skidmore via TKO - Round 1, 0:42)
Jaret Evans vs. Brandon MacArthur 170lbs MacArthur opened the bout with some nice low leg kicks. Unfurtunatly in doig so he also opened himself up to being taken down, which he quickly was by Jaret Evans. Once on the mat Evans quickly went to work sinking in a tight guilotine choke that MacAthur did a teriffic job of rolling out of. However, Evans was not to be denied in thus night and when MacArthur worked his way to his feet, he was taken right back down again. Evans then patiently worked in a deep anaconda choke that had MacAthur quickly tapping out once it was sunk in.
(Jaret Evans def. Brandon MacArthur via submission (anaconda) - Round 1, 2:27)
Spencer Rohovie vs. Mike Bell 155lbs Spencer and Bell wasted little time getting to work in the first round of their fight. Bell through a body kick which Rohovie reponded to with a scrambling takedown. Bell got back up quickly but not for long as Rohovie quickly took him back down to the mat. Rohovie mounted Bell this time but the wily again Bell got out, however this time Rohovie was ready for his escape attempt. As Bell rolled into Rohovie's guard he was immediately caught up in a deep triangle choke and within seconds was tapping for mercy.
(Spencer Rohovie def. Mike Bell via submission (triangle choke) - Round 1, 1:30)
Undercard Josh Kitchen vs Peter Neufeld 170lbs Neufeld and Kitchen threw everything a each other in this fight but the sink. Trading blow for blow the two battled back and forth. It was Neufeld who struck hardest first, flooring Kitchen and then moving in for the kill. Somehow Kitchen fought through a brutal pounding and eventually worked his way back to his feet. From there he picked up Neufeld and drove him across the cage. Neufeld fought his way from his back to the mount where he pounded on Kitchen, but again Kitchen displayed tremendous heart by getting back to a standing position. Back on their feet, Kitchen clinched up with Neufeld and landed a fight ending knee to the jaw that dropped Neufeld like a sack of potatoes, leaving him on the canvas for several minutes collecting his marbles.
(Josh Kitchen def. Peter Neufeld via TKO - Round 1, 3:59)
Devon Neis vs Jason Cecil 205lbs Jason Cecil began thus fight with upwards of 20 knees from the clinch to which Neis responded with a series of jabs and crosses. Devon neis then scored a takedown, landing on top. Then Cecil out of no where flipped Neis over, took the top, and mounted his adversary, landing a couple of powerful elbows. When Neis inevitably rolled to get away from the strikes he was receiving Cecil went for the rear naked choke but he was too high up on Neis' back and slid off. Cecil then worked from his back as Neis landed some big shots standing in Jason Cecils guard. However, Neis got in a little too close and Cecil latched on to an arm, leaned back and pried a quick tapout from his opponent. Both fighters showed great great heart and skill in thius battle that could have gone either way a couple of times.
(Jason Cecil def. Devon Neis via submission (arm-bar) - Round 1, 4:19)
Jeremy Smerek 205lbs vs Adam Rabideaux 205lbs The second bout of the evening saw the pro fighters take the cage. Rabideaux got things going with a powerful takedown that he used to move into side control. Doing some light damage and then almost sinking in a rear naked choke, Rabideaux worked for a quick finish but to no avail. Smerek made his way back to his feet and it then became obvious that that was where he planned on finishing the fight using his superior striking. Smerek picked Rabideaux apart, finally landing a fight ending haymaker that dropped his opponent to the canvas.
(Jeremy Smerek def. Adam Rabideaux via TKO - Round 1, 1:46)
Charlie Langford vs John Herasemluk 185lbs The evening's first bout was contested under amateur rules which featured 3 minute rounds rather the usual 5. Amateur or pro, one couldn't tell the difference as Charlie Langford came in and put on a beautiful display of striking that Herasemluk was hard pressed to defend against. Mixing powerful kicks to the midsection with well timed punches to the head, Langford evaded Herasumluks initial strikes and eventually landed a nice spinning back fist that rattled heram. Langford then landed several rights, including an uppercut that floored his opponent, bringing a swift finish to the fight.
